Democracy in Egypt

In the past couple months I have learned that Egypt has gone through a major crisis. There has been many problems with the government and the people. So the people have decided to rebel against the government. They have used Facebook as a major source to spread the word on what has been going on. This process has influenced many other countries with similar problems to follow. President Mubarak has been trying to stop them from fighting back, but have been struggling to do so. Mubarak has also started taking drastic measures to get his point across. Many protesters put their lives on the line to push for a change in Egypt. But even with the countries people needing to come together at this very crucial time women are still being pushed aside like they are not equal.

This cartoon shows weapons sent to Egypt from the United States. The cartoon is saying that out of all the guns the United States could have sent, Facebook is the only one that actually did them any good. The guns would have just caused more bloodshed and many people would have died. With using Facebook they people of Egypt are able to broadcast to the world what has been going on in the country. This action put pressure on president Mubarak and did way more damage to him then using weapons. This is because it was hurting his image instead of just killing him men.

In Egypt many have fought against their government, and to most people's surprise it is the youth that are leading in the rebellion. A even bigger surprise is that they are using facebook to spread the news on what’s going on. With this rebellion being broadcast worldwide may just be the push that other countries need to start rebelling in their own homeland. This is an example of the domino theory that one country will cause similar events in neighboring countries to occur.

Mubarak their former leader, tried everything to stop the country from exposing what has been going in the country. He tried shutting off the internet and cell phone usage. But the young people would not quit trying to fight Mubarak's tyranny. With many promises not being met and jobs are repressing. Therefore causing riots and people protesting against the protesters have taken to the streets of Cairo, calling it a "Day of Rage". Everyday is like a battlefield for the locals and the police. Many get injured daily, due to conflicts in the street and fighting against the government.

Mubarak was pushed to the edge, so he decided to appoint a vice-president named Omar Suleiman.Mubarak refused to back down, so many citizens refused to follow rules like curfews. Mubarak tried to counter by bringing in the military instead of using the police. But to his surprise the military allowed the citizens to protest as long as it is in a peaceful manner. Mubarak finally declared that he will surrender power next September at the end of his term. But even with Mubarak saying he will not go for president next term there is still violence. Like gunmen firing on anti-government protesters in Cairo. It was estimated that 830 casualties were numbered throughout the fighting.

The U.N. stated that 300 people have died in the unrest. Nothing seems to be working for Mubarak as his son Gamal Mubarak steps down. Even with Mubarak handing his power over the protesters want nothing to do with him. Mubarak then states that he is sorry for the death of the protesters that died. Protesters have been rejoicing since the news of Mubarak standing down for his reign in Egypt.

People have been standing in Tahrir Square dancing and celebrating, cheering and more. These actions by the people of Egypt show how important and useful Facebook can truly be. I believe that they wouldn't have possibly gotten as far as they possibly did without the internet. Technology is growing and is becoming more handy as time goes on. With Mubarak stepping down from power, this could influence many other countries to try and run there unfair leader out of power.

Through all the drama that has been going on in Egypt there are still issues within. The rebels are taking over and are kicking the women out. The women are being pushed to the side like they do not exist. Some women are trying to make groups and unions to try and get females more involved. The presidents wives have been the recent leaders of the Egyptian Woman's Union, but are being blamed for not doing anything to help the cause. With the women being united they will never earn any true rights for themselves.

Egypt was once a beautiful country that drew many people in. Tourist would come for miles to see all that Egypt has to offer. For example the Sphinx, the pyramids and ancient tombs. With whats been going on lately many people have tried to avoid the country at all cost. President Mubarak has tried cutting off other countries and many are just scared to go. Mubarak has stepped down from power and the people are happy. But I don't believe it is completely over since Mubarak's people are still in power. He was wrong for the way he went about trying to gain control of the country and he deserves what he gets for the people fighting to get him out of power. I personally would have done the same because Mubarak was a very horrible leader and should also be punished for the way he has treated his people. The government can finally change to how the people want it and then Egypt can go back to the beautiful country it once was.
